Earl Franklin was born in Muncie Indiana [1]. He probably grew up at a house
at the corner of Second and Mulberry where his father, Pierson W. Franklin,
worked as a miller [2][3]. The family had moved for some years to Minnesota
since census records show some children were born in Minnesota.
Some (possibly most) of the family died of tuberculosis. Earl's brother
William died in 1898 and his mother also died. This was an extremely
traumatic experience and it may have contributed to his early death as a
result of ulcers [4].
On January 16, 1899 Earl Franklin married Bertha Susanna Shipley at Anderson
City, Madison County, Indiana, the town where Bertha's parents lived. Bertha's
mother passed away later that year on October 20, 1899.
Around 1900-1902, Earl Franklin lived at 1005 Liberty Street, in a duplex at
at Joliet, Illinois. This address no longer exists. Liberty Street stops
in the 600s and the area where 1005 Liberty Street is part of a railroad yard.
Earl Franklin is shown on the 1900 census and also a 1901-1902 city directory
as living alone and working as a laborer. He may have worked nearby at the
Joliet Iron Works-- now a registered historic site. This was a major employer
located a block west of the 200-300 blocks of Liberty Street. Since, when he
died, he worked as an iron worker at the St. Louis Screw Company, he appears
to have had special skills related to work in an iron factory.
Bertha's brother, Charles Anderson Shipley, a blacksmith, lived in Joliet at
the time of the census in 1900 so he may have been for that reason that Earl
Franklin moved there. I could not locate Earl Franklin or Bertha Franklin in
the 1900 census.
Ruth Franklin was born in Joliet on July 10, 1901. There is no record of the
birth. According to Phyllis McConnell Frick, Ruth had always had trouble
getting passports because she said that the hospital where records were kept
had burned down. However, the clerk at Joliet county had no knowledge of any
county records lost in a fire.
Earl later travelled across the country. He worked in California, Texas,
Colorado, Illinois and Missouri [4]. For much of Ruth Franklin's life, her
father lived away from home, working as a laborer or as a cook [5]. At one
time he owned a saloon in St. Louis [6].
In 1910 Earl and his family lived in Los Angeles. He is listed as head of
household, age 34. His profession is described as "odd jobs." It shows he
was born in Indiana and that both parents were born in Ohio. Bertha is listed
with him, age 30. It shows she was born in Kansas and both parents were born
in Indiana. Ruth is listed as age 8, born in Illinois with her father born
in Indiana and her mother in Kansas. They had two lodgers living with them.
One was named John H. Sau Veger, age 56. The other was Glen E. Gates, age
20. They lived in Los Angeles Twp, Los Angeles, CA, the census page was 51b.
Charles Anderson Shipley moved to Los Angeles at the same time, so they may
have all moved together.
In 1920 Earl lived at 1926 Warne Avenue, in St. Louis, Missouri, with his wife
Bertha and his daughter Ruth Franklin. Ruth (who was 18), left for college
soon afterward. Earl worked as an iron worker at the St. Louis Screw
Company.
On July 8, 1924, Earl Franklin died at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis
Missouri after an operation for a perforated gastric ulcer. The cause of
death was general peritonitis. To Ruth Franklin's disappointment, he was
buried before she could come to the funeral.
[1] The 1880 (and other census records) show the location of birth as Indiana.
The death certificate, State of Missouri, file no. 21655, gives his correct
date of birth but erroneously puts the location of birth in Minnesota.
[2] In a Muncie City Business Directory published by Kingman Bros, Chicago
1881, in "The History of Delaware County Indiana," Earl's father, Pierson W.
Franklin, is listed as a miller located on the corner of Second and Mulberry.
[3] The 1880 census shows the family lived on Second Street.
