John Wesley Goff 1932 address: Fremont, Nebraska
John W. Goff under date of Feb 20, 1932 provides the following:
"Would it add anything or be of interest if I add to my personal record the following? I enlisted August 30, 1862 as private in Company G, 146th New York Volunteer Infantry and was discharged July 12, 1865 as SERGEANT in same company and regiment. I was in the major battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorville, the Wilderness and several minor engagements. Af the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 I was taken prisoner and for nearly ten months confined in the Confederate military prison at Andersonville, Georgia and Florence, South Carolina. I was paroled in the Spring of 1865, cam into the Union lines at Wilmington, North Carolina and was sent by transport to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, then converted into a hospital. I was reduced by starvation and exposure as to be only semi-conscious. I can recollect seeing the United States flag at Wilmington and many negro soldiers who had participated in the capture of the city a few days before. I have in my possession an original letter to my father, from someone unknown to me, from the hospital advising him, "Your son, John Goff, late a prisoner of war, is at the hospital. He is very sick and I do not think he will live long." I have been active in the civic and business life of Fremont during my residence here. Served two terms as City Clerk and two terms as Assessor. For forty four years I was associated with the real estate firm of Richards, Keene & Co. and its predecessors. Have been Vice President and President of the Security Savings Bank. In 1924 I disposed of part of my interest and retired from active business.
